In a move aimed at easing administrative burdens for employers and education institutions, the United Kingdom’s Home Office has announced a significant change in the visa sponsorship system.
Effective from April 6, 2024, sponsors will no longer be required to renew their sponsor licences, with the expiry date of all licences due on or after this date extended by 10 years.
What is a Visa Sponsor Licence
A Visa Sponsor Licence is a permit required by UK businesses to employ skilled workers from outside the UK, including those from the EEA after 2020. It allows companies to legally sponsor foreign individuals to fill roles within their organization.
What Does This Mean for Sponsors?
Previously, sponsors were obligated to renew their licences every few years, a process involving application submissions and renewal fees. However, with this latest announcement, sponsors can breathe a sigh of relief as the renewal requirement is abolished.
If your sponsor licence is set to expire on or after April 6, 2024, there’s no need to undergo the renewal process or pay any associated fees. Even those who have already applied for renewal will receive a refund of their fees.
Key Changes
Renewal Requirement Removed: Previously, sponsors faced the burden of renewing their licences every four years, involving a 90-day application window and fees ranging from £536 to £1,476. This requirement has been completely abolished for licences expiring on or after April 6, 2024.
Automatic Extensions: As a result of the removal, the Home Office has automatically extended the validity of all qualifying licences by ten years. This means no further action is required from businesses with eligible licences.
Refunds for Recent Applications: Sponsors who already submitted renewal applications prior to the announcement will receive a full refund of the associated fee.
Who Does This Affect?
The UK sponsor licence has been crucial for employers seeking to hire individuals from outside the UK, including citizens of EU member countries and associated nations like Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland who arrived in the UK after December 31, 2020.
Additionally, educational institutions have relied on sponsor licences to facilitate the entry of international students and faculty into the UK.

Streamlined Process, Reduced Wait Times
Previously, sponsors had to submit renewal applications well in advance of the expiry date, facing processing times of up to 8 weeks. Medium and large sponsors were subject to a renewal fee of £1,476, while smaller or charitable sponsors paid £536 per application.
However, with the removal of the renewal requirement, sponsors can now enjoy streamlined processes and reduced wait times for visa sponsorship.
Other Benefits
- Reduced administrative burden: Eliminating renewals streamlines the process, saving businesses time and resources.
- Cost savings:Â Businesses avoid renewal fees, leading to financial benefits.
- Improved efficiency: The automatic extension removes the uncertainty and potential delays associated with manual renewal applications.
Important Note
While the renewal requirement is removed, the Home Office emphasizes the continued importance of sponsor compliance. Businesses must ensure they adhere to all regulations and obligations associated with their sponsorship licence.
This update signifies a positive step towards a more efficient and streamlined immigration system for UK businesses engaging with skilled international talent.
