In a move aimed at improving passenger comfort, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has implemented new guidelines allowing passengers to exit the aircraft and return to the departure gate in case of extended delays after boarding.

This decision comes in response to a rise in flight delays and congestion leading to passengers being stuck onboard for long periods.

Key Points of New Guidelines

  • Passengers can now disembark during long delays and return to the airport terminal through the departure gate.
  • The final call on deplaning passengers will be made by airlines and security agencies.
  • Airport operators are responsible for establishing the necessary infrastructure, including security screening, to facilitate this process.

Focus on Passenger Comfort and Efficiency

Zulfiquar Hasan, Director General of BCAS, announced the issuance of these guidelines on March 30, which are now in effect. Emphasizing the aim to minimize passenger inconvenience, Hasan highlighted the importance of ensuring passengers do not remain confined inside aircraft for prolonged durations post-boarding.

The decision to deboard passengers during prolonged delays or emergencies will be at the discretion of airlines and relevant security agencies.

Addressing Growing Air Traffic Challenges

With domestic air traffic on the rise, Hasan emphasized the need to address congestion at airports. BCAS is committed to implementing optimal standards and tools to alleviate this issue. Plans include the introduction of smart security lanes to enhance the passenger experience.

Introduction of Advanced Security Measures

Furthermore, BCAS plans to operationalize full-body scanners at Bangalore airport this month, with subsequent rollout at airports witnessing annual passenger traffic exceeding 5 million.

In February, BCAS directed seven scheduled airlines to ensure prompt delivery of baggage upon aircraft landing, addressing passenger grievances regarding delays in baggage retrieval.

The new BCAS guidelines offer a welcome change for air travellers, potentially reducing discomfort and frustration during flight delays. With a focus on passenger experience, security improvements, and tackling congestion, BCAS is taking steps to create a smoother and more efficient air travel experience in India.
