Thailand May Impose Travel Restrictions For International Travellers

In light of the recent increase in global Covid-19 cases, many countries have again started imposing travel restrictions for international travellers, particularly those coming from high-risk countries.

In view of the same, Thailand, a country that had previously fully reopened to international travellers and lifted all Covid-19 related travel restrictions, is now considering reimposing travel curbs on international visitors.

According to some media reports, Thailand is considering implementing various travel restrictions for international travellers, including requiring proof of vaccination, mandating Covid-19 insurance for visitors from certain countries, and requiring the use of face masks on public transportation.

1. Proof of vaccination for international travellers

According to a report by Bangkok Post, all visitors to Thailand may be required to show proof of receiving at least two Covid-19 vaccinations to enter the county.

2. Mandatory Covid-19 Insurance

In addition, visitors who will be continuing their journey to a country that requires a negative RT-PCR test result must provide proof of insurance to cover the cost of treatment in the event that their test in Thailand is positive.

In addition, travellers may also be required to wear a face mask while using public transportation in Thailand.

Thailand’s Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the country is not imposing entry rules specifically targeting certain nations, but rather seeking to implement safety measures that align with the rules in place in travellers’ home countries.

For example, China requires all incoming travellers to present a negative PCR test result taken within 48 hours, and India has implemented a similar requirement for visitors from Thailand, China, and three other countries.

It should be noted that Thailand has not yet officially announced any of these restrictions, but there is a high chance that they will be announced soon. A media report also suggested that these restrictions may go into effect on Sunday, January 08.

Tanes Petsuwan, a deputy governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, also stated that visitors to Thailand will not currently be required to provide proof of vaccination at this time.
