India Repatriated Over 47 Lakh People Under Vande Bharat Mission: MEA

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on Thursday, informed that 47 lakh people have been repatriated under the Vande Bharat Mission.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing, Srivastava said: “Phase nine of this mission is presently operational since January 1 and till date, an estimated 1,12,000 people have been repatriated under this phase from 24 countries through 591 international flights.”

Union Civil aviation Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri also tweeted about it, “With the world’s largest vaccination drive set to start from 16 Jan, there will be greater confidence in people travelling to & from India under VBM, world’s largest repatriation mission. More than 47.7 lakh people facilitated so far. This number continues to grow“, he said.

As of January 13, 47 lakh people have been repatriated under the mission. The Vande Bharat Mission started in early May to evacuate Indians stranded abroad due to coronavirus-induced travel restrictions.

Air India and several other private domestic airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet have been operating flights under Vande Bharat Mission since the commencement of the mission.

India also temporarily suspended its Vande Bharat flights from the United Kingdom due to the emergence of the new strain of coronavirus.

Recently, the government also informed that the number of domestic air passenger traffic is returning to pre-COVID levels.

Number of domestic passengers grows steadily towards pre-COVID figures. 2,35,564 passengers on 2,238 flights, total flight movements 4,480, total footfalls at airports 4,69,871,” Puri wrote on Twitter on January 13.
