In response to mounting criticism surrounding flight delays and cancellations due to persistent fog conditions at the Delhi airport, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) unveiled a set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) on Monday.

The move comes as a proactive measure to address the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions during the prevalent fog season.

Key Point Of DGCA SOP

1. Real-time Updates Mandated for Airlines

The primary directive from the DGCA focuses on ensuring that airlines furnish precise, real-time updates on flight delays attributable to fog. Emphasizing transparency, the aviation regulator mandates that this information be readily accessible on the airline’s website. Furthermore, passengers are to be promptly informed through multiple channels, including SMS, WhatsApp, and email.

2. Empowered Staff, Informed Passengers

Recognizing the pivotal role of airline staff in passenger communication, the DGCA underscores the importance of effective training. Airport personnel are expected to communicate appropriately with passengers, providing clear and timely information about any ongoing flight delays.

3. Cancellations Made Easy

To minimize airport congestion and passenger frustration, DGCA allowed airlines to proactively cancel flights anticipated to be delayed beyond a 3-hour threshold due to adverse weather conditions. This measure aims to alleviate congestion at the airport and minimize passenger inconvenience.

4. Implementation of Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR)

The DGCA reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding air travellers through the implementation of the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR). The CAR ensures that passengers are adequately protected in cases of denied boardings, flight cancellations, and delays occurring without proper notice. Airlines are mandated to publish the reference of the CAR on flight tickets.

5. Social Media Erupts, Action Follows

Amidst a flurry of passenger complaints on social media, the DGCA’s action signals its commitment to improving the Delhi airport experience during foggy periods.

6. Aviation Minister Assures Action

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia acknowledges the challenges and assures passengers that all stakeholders are working tirelessly to minimize the impact of fog on flights.

7. Safety First, Always

Even with advanced infrastructure like CAT III runways, safety remains paramount. As Scindia emphasized, temporary shutdowns in extreme fog conditions are inevitable and prioritize passenger well-being.
