Australia Implements Stricter Visa Rules Amid Record-High Migration

Australia is set to implement tougher visa regulations for foreign students, aiming to address soaring migration levels that have exacerbated pressure on the rental market. As official data reveals yet another record-breaking surge in migration, the government is taking decisive steps to rectify the situation.

New Student Visa Rules

The new measures aim to ensure that students genuinely come to Australia for educational purposes. Here’s a breakdown of the key changes:

1. Higher English Language Requirements

Effective this week, stringent English language requirements will be imposed on student and graduate visas. The minimum score required on English proficiency tests, like IELTS, will increase for both student and graduate visas.

Statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show a dramatic rise in net immigration. As of September 30th, 2023, net immigration reached a record high of 548,800, a 60% increase compared to the previous year. This influx contributed to Australia’s population growth of 2.5% – the fastest rate ever recorded.

The surge in migration, primarily driven by students from India, China, and the Philippines, has eased labour shortages and kept wages stable.

However, it has also exacerbated the housing crisis, with rental vacancy rates hitting record lows and new construction unable to keep pace with demand.
