Australia Unveils 5 Major Changes in Student Visa Policy

Australia, renowned for its world-class education system, has recently introduced significant changes to its student visa policies, targeting international students. Effective October of the previous year, Australia has raised the bar for financial proof required from international students. Aspiring students must now demonstrate savings totalling AUD$24,505 (US$15,943), representing a notable 17% increase from previous thresholds.

2. Introduction of Genuine Student Test (GST)

In a bid to ensure the authenticity of students’ intentions, Australia has implemented the Genuine Student Test (GST) as part of the visa application process. This stringent measure, introduced in November 2023, scrutinizes applicants’ genuine intent to pursue temporary study in Australia, replacing the former Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement.

3. Higher English Language Requirements

Effective immediately, English proficiency requirements have risen. Undergraduates now require an IELTS score of 6 (up from 5.5), and postgraduate programs need a score of 6.5 (previously 6). This aims to ensure smoother communication and academic success for international students.

4. University Ranking System

A new university ranking system based on past student visa violations was implemented in December 2023. Universities are categorized into three groups, with Group 1 receiving faster processing times for student visas.

Applicants to universities in Groups 2 and 3 may experience longer processing, potentially requiring additional proof of English proficiency and financial resources.

5. Reduced Post-Study Work Rights

Starting from July 2024, Australia will change its post-study work rights policy for international graduates. Previously extended to undergraduates, master’s, and PhD students in selected programs for up to 4-6 years, the revised policy will revert to the original 2-3 year duration, as confirmed by the Department of Education last month.
