Australia is implementing stricter student visa regulations to manage record-breaking migration levels. The changes, effective from May 10, 2024, target both financial requirements and recruitment practices within the education sector.

Increased Savings Requirement

International students will now need to demonstrate a minimum savings balance of A$29,710 (approximately €18,218) to qualify for a visa. This marks the second increase in seven months, following a previous hike in October 2023. The move aims to ensure students have sufficient funds to support themselves throughout their studies in Australia.

Crackdown on “Dodgy” Recruitment Practices

The Australian government is taking a tough stance against education providers engaging in “non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices.”

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has confirmed that 34 institutions have received warning letters regarding these concerns. Offending institutions face potential penalties, including hefty fines and even a two-year ban on recruiting international students.

“Dodgy providers have no place in our international education sector,” Minister O’Neil stated. “These actions will help weed out those who exploit people and damage the reputation of our education system.”

Balancing Education with Migration Management

Australia’s international education sector is a significant economic contributor, generating A$36.4 billion in 2022/23.

However, the recent surge in migration, largely driven by international students, has placed a strain on housing affordability nationwide. Net immigration figures for the year ending September 2023 reflect a 60% increase, reaching a record high of 548,800.

The government anticipates these new policies could potentially halve Australia’s migrant intake over the next two years. “We are witnessing the largest decrease in migration numbers outside of war or pandemic times,” Minister O’Neil explained.
