AAI To Upgrade Runways At Seven Airports By March 2022

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to upgrade the runways at seven airports across the country by March 2022, as per many media reports on Sunday.

As per the data shared by PTI, these seven airports are located in:

  1. Jammu (J&K),
  2. Kolhapur (Maharashtra),
  3. Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh),
  4. Barapani (Meghalaya),
  5. Kadapa (Andhra Pradesh),
  6. Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) and
  7. Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu).

Officials said the runway at Jammu Airport will be expanded from the current 2,042 meters to 2,438 meters and should be completed by March next year.

“Overall, the runways of these seven airports will be expanded by March 2022,” said an official.

The expansion of the runway at Kolhapur Airport from 1,370 meters to 2,300 meters has started and, according to officials, should be completed by December this year.

They said the runways at Jabalpur Airport and Tuticorin Airport are expected to expand by December 2021 and March 2022, respectively.

Officials stated that an airport runway is designed for a specific type of aircraft, depending on traffic demand and other factors.

The runway at Barapani airport will be “expanded and strengthened” by December this year, officials said. The runway at Kadapa Airport will also be “extended and reinforced” and work will be completed by March 2021.

They said the runway at Tirupati Airport will be extended from the current 2,286 meters to 3,810 meters by December 2021.
