In a major boost for bilateral trade and mobility, the US has pledged to expedite visa processing for Indian business travellers and explore facilitating visa renewals for H-1B visa holders’ families within the US.
This emerged from the 14th US-India Trade Policy Forum (TPF) meeting held in New Delhi last Friday, co-chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Katherine Tai.
Faster E-1 and E-2 Visas by April
Addressing a long-standing concern, India raised the issue of lengthy processing times for E-1 (treaty trader) and E-2 (treaty investor) visas crucial for business travel. Welcoming India’s concerns, the US committed to streamlining the process, aiming for significantly faster turnaround times starting from April onwards.

H-1B visa professionals currently need to return to India for visa renewals, causing disruption and inconvenience. In a positive development, India pushed for extending visa renewal facilities to their families within the US itself. The discussions took place during the US-India Trade Policy Forum meeting held last Friday in New Delhi. Minister Piyush Goyal led the forum, addressing critical issues related to visa processing times and renewal procedures. The meeting aimed to strengthen trade ties and foster collaboration between the two nations.
Goyal’s Statement on Visa Processing
Minister Goyal highlighted the prolonged processing times for E-1 and E-2 visas, affecting businessmen involved in import-export and those working in the US on an investment basis. In response to these concerns, he assured that starting in April, visas will be available in a significantly shorter time frame.
Positive Response to Visa Renewal for Families
Furthermore, Goyal emphasized the demand for allowing H1B visa professionals’ families to renew their visas directly in the United States. The US has responded positively to this request, indicating a more streamlined process for visa renewal for the families of H1B visa holders.

Insights from Commerce Secretary
During the forum meeting, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal underscored the discussions around increasing each country’s participation in government procurement. Enhancing India’s involvement in US government procurement was deemed essential for boosting Indian exports.
However, reciprocity was emphasized, with the expectation that the US would reciprocate by providing opportunities in India’s government procurement.
The developments mark a positive stride in US-India trade relations, aiming to create a more efficient and mutually beneficial visa application process for businessmen and professionals alike.
