In a historic development for educational exchange between India and the United States, the U.S. embassy in India proudly announced on Monday that they have issued an unprecedented number of student visas this summer, surpassing a remarkable total of 90,000.

This achievement reinforces India’s position as a significant contributor to the international student community in the U.S.

Unprecedented Summer Surge

Throughout the months of June, July, and August, the United States embassy in India processed and distributed these student visas, marking a significant milestone in the educational collaboration between the two nations.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy exclaimed, “This summer, almost one in four student visas worldwide was issued right here in India! Congratulations and best wishes to all the students who have chosen the United States to make their higher education goals a reality! That’s a wrap! With teamwork and innovation, we ensured that all qualified applicants reached their programs on time.”

Surpassing Expectations

The embassy’s announcement aligns with the U.S. Mission’s earlier projections at the start of this year’s student visa application process.

Brendan Mullarkey, the acting minister counsellor for consular affairs in India, emphasized in June that, “Last year, a record-breaking 125,000 Indians were issued student visas, surpassing all other nationalities.”

With over 90,000 student visas issued during the summer months, the United States seems poised to set yet another record in the near future.

Indian Students Flourish in the US

The surge in student visas further solidifies the thriving academic partnership between India and the U.S. Currently, in the ongoing academic year, more than 200,000 Indian students are pursuing their higher education at American academic institutions, constituting over 20% of the international student body in the U.S.

Strengthening Educational Ties

In a bid to enhance collaboration in the education sector, India and the U.S. have recently agreed to establish a virtual institute.

his initiative was announced following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a bilateral meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 Summit held in New Delhi earlier this month.
