In a move to tackle the surge in visa applications from India, the US Consulate in Mumbai conducted a special “Super Saturday” drive on March 9th to screen 1,500 visa applicants. This initiative aimed to reduce the waiting period for visas, which had reached up to 1,000 days due to overwhelming demand.

Quarterly Drives to Address Backlog

The US Consulate has acknowledged the significant rise in visa applications from India. To address this, they have increased their manpower and resources for visa processing. Additionally, “Super Saturday” drives will now be held quarterly to streamline the application process.

Visa Chief Encourages Self-Application

Visa Chief Katherine Estes advised applicants to apply directly through the consulate website instead of relying on agents. She highlighted that these agents also monitor the website for appointment openings, and it’s more efficient for applicants to check and book appointments themselves.

Improved Facilities for Applicants

The Consulate ensured a comfortable experience for applicants during the “Super Saturday” drive. They provided seating arrangements, water, food, and wheelchairs for those in need.

Nationwide Reach and Flexibility

Spokesperson Greg Pardo informed that applicants on Saturday came from various parts of India, not just the local area. He emphasized that visa openings are regularly updated online, and applicants have the flexibility to apply at any US embassy or consulate in India.

He further added that applicants can even explore applying from consulates in other countries like Germany, Paris, Dubai, or Doha if they have travel plans to those regions.

Milestones in Visa Processing

The efforts of the US Embassy in New Delhi and its four consulates across the nation yielded significant results, collectively processing over one million visas in 2023, including a substantial number of immigration visas.
