US Consular Teams Push for Increased Visa Processing in India

The US Department of State spokesperson, Matthew Miller, has emphasized the top priority given to visa processing in India by the US Consular teams. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his state visit to the United States, efforts are underway to strengthen the diplomatic ties and address visa-related challenges between the two nations.

In a press briefing on Thursday, US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the significant efforts being made by consular teams to process visa applications in India. Miller emphasized that this endeavour is a top priority for the US government and acknowledged the potential for further improvement in this area.

Enhancing Diplomacy and Addressing Visa Issues

Responding to inquiries regarding India’s expectations from the US concerning diplomacy, immigration, and visa matters during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit, Miller stated that the consular teams have been working tirelessly to process a large number of visa applications in India.

He specifically mentioned the visa categories crucial to the bilateral relationship and reaffirmed that this remains a top priority for the US government.

Miller acknowledged that there is ongoing work to be done in this regard and refrained from providing specific details about potential announcements related to the visit, deferring to the White House for further information.


US-India Partnership: A Pivotal Relationship

During the press briefing, Miller underscored the significance of the US-India partnership, describing it as one of the most consequential relationships. He emphasized the close collaboration between the two nations on vital priorities.

Prime Minister Modi’s Upcoming US Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to embark on a state visit to the United States from June 21 to June 24. The Ministry of External Affairs announced that PM Modi will be welcomed by US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at a state dinner to be held at the White House.

Additionally, PM Modi will address top US company chairpersons and CEOs at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington. Furthermore, he will have the opportunity to address a joint meeting of the US Congress for the second time. PM Modi expressed his honour in accepting the invitation and eagerly anticipates his address on June 22.

Strong Educational Ties between India and the US

Speaking at the US Embassy in India last week, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti emphasized the strength of the relationship between India and the United States. He noted that Indian students constitute the largest group of international students in the US, surpassing students from any other country.


Garcetti revealed that one out of every five US student visas issued in 2022 was granted to Indian students. He commended the US Mission in India for conducting its 7th Annual Student Visa Day, during which consular officers interviewed Indian student visa applicants.

The ambassador expressed his admiration for the mission’s work and the robust India-US relationship, highlighting the role of Indians in pursuing education in the United States and showcasing their excellence.

Garcetti projected continued growth in this relationship and expressed optimism about processing a record number of visa applications in the future.
