The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced exciting news for naturalization applicants! Starting April 1, 2024, applying for a Social Security number (SSN) or replacement card becomes much easier.
This update offers applicants the convenience of requesting an original or replacement Social Security number (SSN) or card and updating their immigration status with the Social Security Administration (SSA) without the need to visit an SSA office.
Key Changes for Naturalization Applicants
1. SSN Request Option
Noncitizen applicants filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization (edition date 04/01/24), can now request an original or replacement SSN or update their immigration status with the Social Security Administration (SSA) directly within the application.
2. No More SSA Office Visits
New citizens will no longer be required to visit an SSA field office to apply for an SSN or replacement card or to provide documentation as evidence of their U.S. citizenship status. However, it is important to note that SSA may still request additional information if needed.
3. Form Edition
Applicants using the 09/17/19 edition of Form N-400 will not have the SSN request option available. The option is exclusively included in the 04/01/24 edition of the form.
Who Benefits?
- This streamlined process applies only to those filing the new edition of Form N-400 (available for online filing on April 1st).
- Applicants using the previous version (09/17/19) won’t have this option as the SSA questions are not included.
