After more than two and a half years of Covid-19 prevention measures, social distancing rules, and strict face mask regulations, the UAE (United Arab Emirates) finally abolished its mandatory mask requirements in nearly all public and indoor spaces effective September 28.

The decision comes after the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) made its announcement and the Dubai Airports made mask-wearing as optional for passengers at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC).

No Face Mask Required

Mask Requirement at Abu Dhabi Airport

After DXB and DWC, the Abu Dhabi International Airport has now announced that wearing a mask is optional for all passengers passing through the terminal. The government will continue to follow Covid-19 precautionary measures, such as social distancing, sterilisation, and preventive guidelines.

According to the airport, it is up to the airlines to specify whether masks are optional or required on board. Earlier, UAE-based airlines including Emirates and flydubai confirmed that masks are not required for passengers on board.

Etihad Airways, on the other hand, stated that masks would be required only for passengers flying to China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Maldives, Philippines, South Korea, Seychelles, or Canada.

Emirates and flydubai had also clarified that passengers flying from or transiting through Dubai airports would be subject to the Covid safety rules of their destination throughout their journey. This means that if the final destination requires masks, the airline will request that passengers wear a face covering.
