InterNations, a global network for expatriates, conducted a survey in February of this year, gathering responses from over 12,000 participants worldwide. The survey aimed to determine the best and worst countries for expats based on various factors.

The results highlighted Mexico as one of the top destinations, consistently ranking in the top five since the survey’s inception in 2014. Expats cited reasons such as local friendliness, a vibrant culture, and favourable housing options for Mexico’s popularity.

Top 10 Countries for Expats

As per InterNations’s survey, Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines emerged as top destinations for expats due to their accessibility and affordability.

3. Panama

Known for its thriving economy and favourable business environment, Panama is a sought-after destination for expats. Its modern infrastructure, breathtaking natural beauty, and opportunities for career growth make it an attractive option for those looking to work and live abroad.

4. Malaysia

On the other hand, the survey identified Germany, South Korea, Turkey, Norway, and Kuwait as the worst places for expatriates. These countries scored poorly across various categories, leading to their unfavourable ranking.

Expats in Japan may find it challenging to navigate the language barrier, strict work culture, and societal expectations. The country’s unique customs, long working hours, and competitive environment can pose difficulties for expatriates seeking a comfortable living experience.

2. New Zealand

While New Zealand offers breathtaking landscapes and a relaxed lifestyle, expats may face challenges in terms of limited job opportunities, high living costs, and geographic isolation. Adjusting to the cultural nuances and building social networks can be demanding.

3. Malta

Expats in Malta may face difficulties with the high cost of living, limited job opportunities, and challenges in accessing quality healthcare and education. The small size of the country and cultural differences can also impact the expatriate experience.

4. Italy

Italy’s bureaucratic hurdles, slow processes, and cultural differences can make it challenging for expatriates to navigate daily life. Insights on Expatriate Life in India:

India secured the 36th position out of 53 nations in the overall expat ranking. However, it performed significantly worse in the Quality of Life Index, coming in at 52nd place. The survey highlighted several areas where India fell short of expectations, including travel and transit, environmental conditions, leisure options, safety, and security.

Despite these drawbacks, expats found certain aspects of India appealing, such as healthcare facilities, local friendliness, cultural richness, culinary experiences, and career prospects. However, respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s air quality and urban environment. A significant proportion (55%) of participants believed that the government did not prioritize environmental protection.

Expats generally viewed India as a chaotic and unsafe country. However, they appreciated its affordability, with India ranking 9th in the personal finance index of the survey. An impressive 72% of expats reported being satisfied with their financial situation in India, surpassing the global average of 52%.
