The Sri Lankan Cabinet has unveiled a groundbreaking proposal to offer free visas to travellers from seven key countries, marking a significant move to bolster the nation’s tourism industry.

It is worth noting that earlier this month, Harin Fernando, Minister of Tourism and Lands, announced that a joint Cabinet paper with Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, for free visas to several countries had been filed for approval.

Free Visas to Tourists from 7 Countries

According to an approved proposal, the free visa facility will be available to travellers from seven countries, including China, Russia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, and Indonesia. This initiative will take immediate effect as a pilot project and will run until March 31, 2024.

However, travellers from these countries will still be required to obtain visas for security purposes, no charges will apply.

The announcement was made by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry, who tweeted, “Cabinet approves issuing of free visas to India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia & Thailand with immediate effect as a pilot project till 31 March.”

The Ministry of Tourism in Sri Lanka had previously revealed that a Cabinet paper had been presented during a recent Cabinet meeting, outlining the issuance of free tourist visas to foreigners from five countries intending to visit Sri Lanka for tourism purposes.

Tourism Boost Anticipated

According to India Outbound, tourism officials anticipate that providing free visas will significantly boost tourist arrivals in the coming years, potentially reaching five million visitors.

India stands as the largest source market for Sri Lanka, and the country has been a primary focus of the tourism ministry’s marketing and communication strategy, with various roadshows and events conducted in India.

China Another Promising Market

Another promising source of increased tourist arrivals is China, as Sri Lanka is one of the 20 countries where Chinese tourists have been permitted to visit. To further enhance the tourism experience, the Sri Lankan government is actively exploring the introduction of an e-ticketing system for most tourist sites across the country.

Conclusion

These combined efforts underscore the nation’s commitment to fortify its tourism sector, providing visitors from around the world with smoother and more enjoyable travel experiences. Sri Lanka continues to position itself as a top travel destination, offering a rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty to all who visit.
