According to a recent report by the SchengenVisaInfo, a significant number of individuals, totalling 76,352, applied for a Schengen Visa in India throughout the year 2022. This influx of applicants led to a substantial sum of over €6.1 million in expenses being incurred for India’s Schengen visa application fees.
Mumbai Consulate Takes the Lead
Among the applicants, 76,352 people paid the standard €80 fee for their visa application, with the Mumbai consulate recording the highest expenditure of €4.4 million.
The New Delhi and Bangalore consulates secured the second and third positions, with visa application fees amounting to almost €1.1 million and €508,000, respectively. Notably, the New Delhi consulate processed 13,341 applications, while the Bangalore consulate received 6,345 applications.
Denials and Expenses
Unfortunately, some applicants faced visa denials. The data reveals that 13 visas were not issued at the Bangalore consulate, resulting in expenses totalling €1,040. Similarly, the Mumbai consulate rejected 7,335 visa applications, incurring expenses of €586,800.
The New Delhi consulate experienced 1,519 rejections, amounting to an expensive loss of €121,520. The Kolkota and Chennai consulates saw three and five applications being rejected, resulting in visa fee losses of €240 and €400, respectively.

India’s Schengen Visa Application Numbers
India ranks as the third country with the highest number of applicants for Schengen visas, with a total of 671,928 applications in 2022. The associated expenses for these applications amounted to €53.7 million.
The leading countries in terms of application numbers are Russia with 687,239 applications (€54.9 million in fees) and Turkey with 778,409 applications (€62.2 million in fees).
Airport Transit Visa Applications
Additionally, a total of 167 applications for airport transit visas (ATVs) were recorded across various Indian consulates. The Bangalore consulate processed 24 ATVs, Mumbai had 122, New Delhi had 20, and Chennai had one application.
Notably, the issuance rates for ATVs varied across consulates, with Mumbai and New Delhi reporting rates of 16.7% and 25%, respectively.
Not Issued Rates
The Mumbai consulate had the highest rate of non-issuance for uniform visas, standing at 12.9%. The New Delhi consulate closely followed with a rate of approximately 10.8%. Consistently, the Mumbai and New Delhi consulates also recorded non-issuance rates of 12.9% and 10.9%, respectively, for airport transit visa applications.
