Russia has put forward an enticing proposal to establish a visa-free travel arrangement with India, enabling tourists from both countries to explore each other’s lands hassle-free.
Economic Development Minister Maksim Reshetnikov disclosed this proposition on Thursday, aiming to bolster tourism ties between the two nations.
Russia Visa-Free Travel for Organized Groups
In a bid to foster closer tourism collaboration, Russia has suggested a novel regime that allows tourists from India and Russia to visit each other’s countries without the need for visas.
Minister Maksim Reshetnikov highlighted that this proposal is designed for travellers who embark on organized group tours. By eliminating visa requirements for such groups, both countries aim to facilitate seamless travel experiences.
E-Visa for Indian Passport Holders
It is important to mention here that commencing from August 1, Russia commenced the issuance of electronic visas (e-visas) to Indian passport holders. This innovative approach streamlines the process of obtaining travel approvals, catering to various purposes including business trips, guest visits, and tourism.
The e-visa system contributes to enhancing the ease of travel and strengthening ties between the two nations.
Similar Schemes with China and Future Prospects
Minister Reshetnikov highlighted that Russia has already initiated a similar visa-free travel arrangement with China, rekindling tourism ties between the two Asian giants.
Turning its focus to India, Moscow has extended a proposal to establish a comparable scheme. Currently undergoing diplomatic negotiations, both countries are eager to expedite the process and foster enhanced tourism cooperation.
Challenges Amidst the Pandemic and Ukraine Conflict
The proposal for visa-free travel comes at a time when Russia’s tourism industry grapples with the arduous task of restoring pre-pandemic levels of tourist arrivals. The ongoing Ukraine conflict has further impacted the sector, necessitating innovative approaches to revitalize the industry and promote cross-border tourism.
Resumption of Visa-Free Agreements
On August 1, Russia reinstated a previously suspended visa-free travel agreement with China, initially established in 2000. This arrangement applies to tourist groups comprising a minimum of five individuals travelling on a shared itinerary and program.
Furthermore, Russia has also forged a similar visa-free travel accord with Iran, marking a milestone in promoting people-to-people connections.
Wider Accessibility with Electronic Visas
Concurrently, Russia unveiled a comprehensive scheme enabling citizens from 55 countries to secure an electronic visa at an affordable fee of approximately $52. Valid for 60 days, this electronic document allows visitors to remain in the country for up to 16 days.
The move aims to enhance accessibility and broaden the range of visitors to Russia, contributing to the nation’s thriving tourism sector.
