In a move to boost tourism and provide a seamless experience for visitors during the upcoming New Year holidays, Phuket, one of Thailand’s premier destinations, has introduced an online visa extension system.
The Immigration Bureau Commissioner, Pol Lt Gen Itthiphon Itthisanronnachai, announced this significant development, allowing foreigners residing in Phuket under 12 designated visa types to apply for visa extensions online. This is particularly important during the upcoming peak season when visitor numbers are expected to surge.
Simplified Visa Extensions
Previously, foreigners residing in Phuket under any of the 12 designated visa types had to apply for extensions in person at the local immigration office.
The new online system, called “E-Extension,” allows them to submit their documents and schedule appointments electronically, significantly reducing the time and hassle involved.
Boosting Phuket’s Tourism Appeal
Phuket has been a key focus of the Thai government’s efforts to revive the country’s tourism industry. Several measures have been implemented, including visa waivers for tourists from China and India.
These initiatives have yielded positive results, with Phuket Airport reporting record arrivals from Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and India in December.
The E-Extension system is expected to further boost Phuket’s appeal by making it easier for foreigners to stay longer and enjoy their vacations.
Operational Details Yet to be Disclosed
While the system is currently operational in other major Thai cities like Bangkok, Chonburi, and Chiang Mai, specific details regarding its implementation for foreigners in Phuket are yet to be officially disclosed on the Phuket Immigration website.
Lt Gen Itthiphon is scheduled to meet with local immigration officers to discuss potential issues, gather feedback, and consider necessary changes.
Trial Run a Success
The E-Extension service was initially launched as a pilot program in Bangkok last November. The collaboration with VFS Global, an authorized partner for the UK government, proved successful, paving the way for the nationwide rollout.
Thailand on Track for Tourism Recovery
With the launch of the E-Extension system and other initiatives, Thailand is well on its way to achieving its pre-pandemic tourism targets.
The country has already welcomed around 24.5 million visitors in 2023, exceeding the government’s goal for the year. While still short of the record 40 million visitors seen in 2019, the upward trend is encouraging.
Moving Forward
Phuket is committed to continuously improving the E-Extension system based on feedback from local immigration officers and foreign residents. This commitment to innovation and visitor experience will surely position Phuket as a top destination for international travellers in the coming years.
Overall, launching the online visa extension system is a positive step for Phuket and Thailand’s tourism industry. By making it easier for foreigners to stay longer and explore more, the island is setting itself up for a successful post-pandemic future.
