In a recent statement, Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail clarified that the government has no plans to expand the visa-on-arrival program in Malaysia. The minister’s remarks were made in response to calls for the program’s expansion, particularly by the country’s tourism minister.

Malaysia’s Visa-On-Arrival Program

Malaysia’s Visa On Arrival (VOA) program allows eligible travellers to obtain their visa upon arrival at Malaysian entry points, simplifying the visa application process. As of September 2021, the VOA program primarily catered to citizens of China and India, enabling them to acquire their visas upon arrival without prior arrangements.

However, for the most current and accurate information, it is recommended to consult official Malaysian government sources.

Visas for Indian and Chinese Visitors Remain

Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail emphasized that the government does not intend to waive visa requirements for visitors from India and China. He cited the fact that both countries currently impose visa requirements on Malaysian citizens, as reported by The Star newspaper.

At present, Malaysian visas are exclusively granted on arrival to Chinese and Indian nationals. This policy has been in effect for some time, facilitating travel for citizens from these two countries.

Tourism Minister’s Proposal

Earlier in February, Malaysia’s tourism minister, Tiong King Sing, had urged the government to extend the visa-on-arrival program to all nationalities. This proposal aimed to enhance the country’s tourism competitiveness by streamlining entry procedures and attracting a wider range of international tourists.

Malaysia Aims to Attract 16.1 Million Foreign Tourists

The Malaysian government has set an ambitious goal of welcoming 16.1 million foreign tourists this year. This target represents a significant 60% increase compared to the previous year’s tourist arrivals.

Although the visa-on-arrival program will not be expanded, the government will continue to explore other strategies to achieve this tourism growth.

Conclusion

Malaysia’s Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, has reaffirmed the government’s decision to maintain the current visa-on-arrival program, exclusively applicable to Chinese and Indian nationals. With an aim to attract 16.1 million foreign tourists this year, Malaysia seeks to boost its tourism competitiveness through alternative measures as it upholds its existing visa policies.
