New Visa Extension Rules to Take Effect in Hong Kong

Hong Kong will discontinue its special arrangement for applications for extension of stay for eligible non-permanent residents who are outside Hong Kong and are unable to return to Hong Kong in time.

The special arrangement, which was introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will end on January 1, 2024.

New Rules to Take Effect on January 1, 2024

Effective January 1, 2024, eligible non-permanent residents will be required to be physically present in Hong Kong in order to apply for an extension of stay. This applies to both the time of application and the time of collection of the “e-Visa” for extension of stay.

  • General Employment Policy (including both employment and investment as entrepreneurs)
  • Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals
  • Quality Migrant Admission Scheme
  • Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates
  • Admission Scheme for the Second Generation of Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents
  • Technology Talent Admission Scheme
  • Capital Investment Entrant Scheme
  • Residence as dependents
  • Students enrolled in full-time study programmes

Special Arrangement to Remain in Effect Until January 1, 2024

The special arrangement for applications for an extension of stay will remain in effect until January 1, 2024.

Eligible non-permanent residents who are outside Hong Kong and are unable to return to Hong Kong in time may continue to apply for an extension of stay under the special arrangement, provided that the application reaches the Immigration Department (ImmD) before January 1, 2024.

How to Apply for an Extension of Stay

Eligible non-permanent residents may submit applications for an extension of stay online or through their sponsors/authorized representatives in Hong Kong.
