Applying for a trip to Japan just got easier for Indian tourists! Starting April 1, 2024, Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India can now apply for electronic visas (eVisas) to visit Japan. This eliminates the need for physical visa stickers on passports, streamlining the application process.

What is the Japan eVisa Program?

The Japan eVisa program offers a single-entry short-term visa specifically for tourism purposes. With an approved eVisa, you can enjoy a stay of up to 90 days in the Land of the Rising Sun.

What’s Changing?

Gone are the days of queuing up for physical visa stickers on passports. The new eVisa system streamlines the process, allowing individuals to apply for visas electronically through Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global.

Key Details of Japan eVisa

  • Eligibility: Both Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India can now apply for the eVisa.
  • Visa Type: This initiative offers a single-entry short-term visa tailored specifically for tourism, with a maximum stay of 90 days in Japan.

How to Apply for a Japan eVisa

The application process remains similar to the previous system. Applicants will submit their applications through the Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global. However, instead of receiving a traditional visa sticker, successful applicants will receive an electronic visa.

How It Works

Instead of the traditional visa sticker, successful applicants will receive an electronic visa. Upon arrival at the airport, travellers must present a “visa issuance notice” on their smartphones. It’s essential to have internet access for this step.

Displaying the “Visa Issuance Notice”

  • Check-in Process: When checking in at the airport, travellers will need to display the “visa issuance notice” on their device.
  • Obtaining the Notice: Travel agencies will provide a “Visa Issuance Notice” with a two-dimensional barcode. This can be in printed or PDF format.
  • Displaying the Notice: By scanning the barcode with their device and entering the required information, travellers can display the electronic “visa issuance notice.” A countdown timer indicates the validity of the notice.
