In a long-awaited move, India is preparing to open a new consulate in the United States’ vibrant city of Seattle, marking the realization of a plan first unveiled back in 2016.
This development comes after a joint statement following high-level talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington in June confirmed India’s intention to operationalize a consulate in Seattle.
The establishment of the consulate is expected to take place by the end of this month, according to sources familiar with the matter. It will be located in the heart of Seattle, a major technology hub with significant economic and cultural ties to India.
Prakash Gupta Appointed Consul General
2002 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Prakash Gupta has been appointed Consul General at the mission in Seattle. Gupta is currently serving as a joint secretary at the United Nations Political Division at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Consulate to Strengthen India-US Ties
The opening of the consulate in Seattle is seen as a sign of the growing strength of the India-US relationship. The consulate will provide consular services to Indians living in the Pacific Northwest and will also promote trade and investment between India and the United States.
Consulates to Open in Other Cities
In addition to the consulate in Seattle, India also plans to open two new consulates in other cities in the United States. The locations of these consulates have not yet been announced.
US to Open Consulates in India
The United States is also planning to open two new consulates in India, in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. These consulates will provide consular services to Americans living in India and will also promote trade and investment between the United States and India.
The opening of new consulates in both countries is expected to facilitate travel and trade between India and the United States. The consulates will also provide a platform for cultural exchange between the two countries.
