In a bid to streamline immigration procedures and enhance the passenger experience, Icelandic authorities have unveiled a state-of-the-art arrival border hall for travellers arriving from territories located outside the Schengen Zone.

The new facility, designed to meet the requirements of recently implemented European regulations, is set to revolutionize the handling of passengers entering Iceland.

Improved Flow and Reduced Waiting Times

According to a report by Isavia, the national airport operator, the opening of the new border hall will significantly improve the flow of travelers within the terminal.

Addressing the long-standing issue of extensive queues at border control, the authorities aim to reduce waiting times and boost efficiency with the introduction of self-service machines.

The newly constructed border hall is a temporary structure that will serve as a crucial interim solution until a permanent facility for the EU’s Schengen external border is established.

Designed with versatility in mind, the building can be dismantled and repurposed once its role in border control concludes, ensuring maximum utilization of resources, as highlighted by Isavia.

Strategic Location for Smooth Transitions

Situated on the east side of South Budling, the one-floor building is strategically located for easy access and smooth passenger transition. Previous plans indicated that a new connecting building between the North and South terminals would be constructed at the heart of Keflavik Airport, which will serve as the main point of entry for all travellers.

Expanding Terminal Capacity

Authorities in Iceland consider the new border hall as a vital component of the airport’s ongoing development project. Besides bridging the original terminal with the South Building, the facility aims to enhance services for passengers with connecting flights through Keflavik Airport.

Combined with the East Wing, currently under construction, this additional building will expand the terminal’s capacity by an impressive 70 per cent, providing ample space for the growing number of travellers.

Enhanced Baggage Reception Facilities

In a related development, Icelandic authorities have also announced plans for a new baggage reception hall, set to be operational by the end of this year. This facility, located within the ongoing construction of the East Wing at Keflavik Airport, promises a significant upgrade to the arrival experience.

Director of Business and Development at Isavia, Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, emphasized the expansion, stating that the size and performance of the baggage reception belts will be tripled, while the waiting area for arriving passengers will double in size. This transformation aims to revolutionize the entire arrival process for visitors to the country.

Phased Unveiling of Eastern Wing

Rúnarsson further revealed that the eastern wing of the airport will be unveiled gradually, with the new baggage reception being the first stage, expected to commence next year. Subsequent stages will be implemented throughout the following year, with completion scheduled by the end of that year.
