Germany to Streamlines Immigration for Non-EU Skilled Workers

In a significant development, Germany is poised to enact a groundbreaking law this week aimed at streamlining the immigration process for skilled workers, particularly those from outside the European Union (EU).

Following a recent agreement among lawmakers from the ruling coalition parties, the government is confident that the long-awaited reforms will revolutionize Germany’s immigration policies.

Addressing the media at a press conference held on Monday, Katja Mast of the Social Democratic Party, which governs in conjunction with the Free Democrats and Greens, emphasized the urgent need for these reforms, stating that they will bring Germany’s immigration policies up to date. “And we will achieve that this week,” she asserted, joined by Johannes Vogel from the Free Democrats and Irene Mihalic from the Greens.

Motivated by Labor Shortages, Germany Takes Action

Europe’s largest economy has been grappling with a labour shortage crisis. According to the labour ministry’s data, job vacancies in 2022 reached a record high, nearing the two million mark.

To address this pressing issue, the German government unveiled a draft legislation in late March this year, which is expected to significantly increase the number of workers from non-EU countries by approximately 60,000 individuals annually.

Revised Immigration Pathways Offered to Foreign Workers

Under the proposed legislation, foreign workers will have three distinct pathways to enter Germany, each catering to different circumstances and qualifications. Notably, a new “opportunity card” will be introduced for individuals who lack a job offer but possess the potential to find employment in the country.

This innovative card will operate on a points-based system that takes into account various factors, such as qualifications, language proficiency, professional experience, connection to Germany, and age.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government unveiled a comprehensive set of reforms in March, targeting immigration, skills training, and the promotion of immigration from non-EU countries.
