France has taken a groundbreaking step in visa issuance within the European Union by launching Digital Schengen visas. This initiative marks the first instance of such visas being introduced within the EU, setting the stage for the anticipated complete digitalization of Schengen visa processes by 2026.
Digital Schengen Visa
A Digital Schengen Visa is a new electronic visa launched by France to streamline the application process for specific groups attending the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics.
It replaces the traditional paper visa with a secure electronic record that can be easily accessed and verified. This is a pilot program to test the feasibility of a wider rollout of digital visas across the Schengen zone in the future.
70,000 visas for the Olympic Family and Guests
In anticipation of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11 and August 28 to September 8 respectively, French authorities are preparing to distribute approximately 70,000 digital visas.
However, given the limited allocation, not all applicants will be eligible.
Eligibility Criteria for French Digital Schengen Visas
According to French authorities, two primary groups of non-EU citizens requiring visas for entry may qualify for the French Digital Schengen visa:
1. Members of the Olympic and Paralympic Family
This group encompasses individuals accredited by their respective committees, including:
- International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) members
- International federations and national committees
- Olympic Games organizing committee members and national associations
- Athletes, judges, coaches, sports technicians, and medical personnel
- Accredited journalists, senior executives, donors, and patrons
The application process for this group is notably streamlined, bypassing traditional appointment scheduling, document collection, and fee payment. Applicants need only present themselves at the designated visa centre at the scheduled time, along with their passport and valid accreditation certificate issued by the OCOG.
- No appointment scheduling or document collection
- No visa fees
- Simplified procedure at visa centres:Â Applicants only need to present their passport and valid OCOG accreditation certificate.
2. Other Official Guests Invited by the OCOG
Individuals invited by the Olympic and Paralympic Committee (OCOG) to attend the Games can apply for a Digital Schengen visa through the France-Visas website. They will need to:
- Complete an online application
- Gather the required documents as listed on the website
- Provide a letter of invitation from the OCOG
- Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) at the visa centre
Similar to the first group, no visa fees are applicable for this category. However, both groups must provide biometric data (fingerprints and photos) at the visa centre.
3. Application for Spectators
Spectators intending to attend the games will not be eligible for digital visas and must apply for a regular Schengen Visa.
