Fare Hike: Domestic Airfare Increase By 12.5% From Today, Here Is Why!

As the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on Thursday increased the minimum and the maximum band of domestic airfares chargeable by airlines, now the cost of domestic flight tickets in India will increase by 12.5%.

With this hike of 12.5%, the minimum one-way fare on the Delhi-Mumbai route will rise from ₹4,700 to ₹5,287 and the maximum, from ₹13,000 to ₹14,625 excluding taxes.

It is important to note that the above fare range does not include passenger security fees of ₹150 applicable for domestic travel and GST.

Aviation Ministry Hiked Fare 15% In June

On 21st June, the aviation ministry had increased the fares of domestic flights by 15 percent. During the second wave of the corona, the number of operational domestic flights was reduced from 80 percent before Covid-19 to 50 percent.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Civil Aviation continuously regulated airfares and the capacity of passengers. The impact of which has been seen on the earnings of airlines companies.

Domestic Airfare Increase Fourth Time This Year

It is the fourth time this year when the Ministry of Civil Aviation has increased the lower and upper band of domestic airfare.

This also includes the latest one amid rising jet fuel prices, which account for nearly 40% of the operating cost of airlines.

Domestic Flights Capacity Increased

The aviation ministry on Thursday also announced that Indian airlines can now operate a maximum of 72.5% of their pre-Covid domestic flights instead of the 65% with immediate effect. As of now, all domestic airlines has been operating at 65% of their pre-Covid domestic flights since 5 July

It must be noted that in July 2020, the ministry of civil aviation (MoCA) hiked the capacity of domestic flights to 65% from the earlier 50%.
