Expatriates living and working in Saudi Arabia require a valid iqama, or residency permit, to reside legally in the country. According to a recent statement by a Saudi lawyer, obtaining a final exit visa is impossible without a current iqama. This information was clarified via social media video where he addressed a question regarding an expat whose iqama had expired two years prior.
Expired Iqama Not Grounds for Arrest
While a renewed iqama is necessary for a final exit visa, an expired iqama itself is not grounds for arrest by Saudi authorities. Failing to renew the iqama on time incurs a fine instead of immediate arrest unless there are other legal reasons for detainment.
Penalties for Delayed Iqama Renewal
Failure to obtain a resident ID within 90 days of entering Saudi Arabia results in a fine of SR500 for expatriates. The process involves fulfilling requirements such as a medical test and completing necessary paperwork through platforms like Absher or Muqeem portal.
