Travelling to Europe is about to get a whole lot easier! The European Union (EU) is making significant strides towards a fully digital Schengen visa application process, aiming to eliminate the need for in-person visits and expedite the process for frequent travellers.

This exciting news was announced by Teodora Marinska, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Public Affairs at the European Travel Commission, during a session titled “Strengthening Inter-Regional Travel: Learnings from Europe” at the Arabian Travel Market.

Understanding Digital Schengen Visa Applications!

The new Schengen visa system will allow online applications, eliminating the need for in-person visits. This simplifies the process, especially for frequent travellers. While details are still emerging, this digital shift aims to streamline the application experience and potentially speed up approval times.

Easing Travel Hurdles

Acknowledging the challenges posed by traditional visa application procedures, Marinska highlighted the cumbersome process of securing appointments, leading to frustrating delays.

She noted that certain consulates were favoured due to their perceived efficiency, contributing to uneven application distribution. The proposed digitalization of the Schengen visa process aims to address these disparities and streamline accessibility.

Schengen Visa: A Boon with Bottlenecks

The Schengen visa, a prerequisite for visiting most European countries, has been a major success story, facilitating seamless travel across the Schengen Area, the world’s largest passport-free zone. However, the current application process can be riddled with frustrating delays, often due to appointment backlogs.

Marinska pinpoints a key reason for these delays: “People tend to apply to specific consulates perceived to have an easier application process.” This creates an uneven distribution of workloads, leading to bottlenecks in certain consulates.

Digitalization: The Game Changer

The EU’s solution? A digital revolution! By transitioning to a fully online platform, the EU aims to streamline the application process, eliminating the need for physical appointments.

This will not only save travellers valuable time but also create a more consistent application experience across all Schengen member states.

Focus on Customer Experience

Marinska emphasizes the importance of a seamless travel experience: “Digitalization is key. We have the tools to create a super smooth process with digital visas. However, ensuring efficient border security without causing delays or additional burdens on transportation operators is crucial.”

Learning from Schengen: A Model for Others

The Schengen Area serves as a successful model for other regions seeking to establish similar travel zones. However, Marinska cautions against prioritizing security measures at the expense of free movement and the economic benefits of tourism.

She advises the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which is considering a similar system, to “think through the eyes of the traveller” during policy development. Streamlining processes and prioritizing traveller experience will ultimately lead to a more efficient and secure system for all.

The tourism sector is constantly evolving, and Marinska emphasizes the need for adaptable systems: “The tourism environment is extremely dynamic. Any system we have in place needs to be able to change very quickly.”
