Delhi airport gets swanky new expanded Terminal 1! On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly expanded Terminal 1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The expanded terminal, according to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the airport operator, is expected to commence operations by May. This expansion project was one of the 15 airport projects inaugurated by the PM from Azamgarh.
Double the Capacity & Convenience
The biggest highlight of the expansion is the doubling of T1’s passenger capacity. The terminal can now handle a whopping 40 million passengers annually, putting Delhi Airport in the elite company of global hubs managing 100 million passengers per year.
This expansion complements the existing capacities of Terminal 2 (15-17 MPPA) and Terminal 3 (45 MPPA).
Faster Boarding and Streamlined Check-In
Say goodbye to the wait for buses! The revamped T1 boasts 22 passenger boarding bridges, allowing direct access to aircraft. This eliminates the need for bus transfers, saving you precious time. Additionally, the terminal features:
- 108 Self-Service Kiosks: Check-in and print boarding passes with ease.
- 100 Check-In Counters: Dedicated staff to assist with check-in for those who prefer a personal touch.
- 36 Self-Baggage Drop Kiosks: Expedite your baggage check-in process.
Enhanced Baggage Handling
The new T1 features 10 baggage reclaim carousels, each longer than the previous ones. This translates to shorter waiting times for your luggage. The baggage handling system has also been doubled in capacity, ensuring a smoother flow of your belongings.
Faster Security Checks and Improved Accessibility
The expanded T1 boasts 24 entry points, easing congestion and speeding up security checks. Passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) will find designated zones with:
- Curbside Lounges: Relax and wait comfortably before your flight.
- PRM-Friendly Phones: Easy communication for assistance.
- Sunflower Services: Discreet assistance for those who may need it.
- Elevated Seating Areas: Enhanced comfort within the terminal.
Expected Operational Date
While the inauguration has taken place, an official operational date for the new T1 hasn’t been announced yet. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is currently finalizing training for personnel and ensuring seamless airport transfers before welcoming passengers through the swanky new terminal.
This expansion marks a significant step forward for Delhi’s IGI Airport, offering a more efficient and comfortable travel experience for all passengers. So, the next time you fly through Delhi, be prepared to be impressed by the new Terminal 1!
