As India gears up for its 75th Republic Day celebrations, travellers flying through the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi can expect temporary air traffic disruptions for eight days, starting today (January 19, 2024).
Daily Shutdowns for Preparations
From January 19 to 25, all non-scheduled flights (including chartered flights) operated by scheduled airlines will be grounded between 10:20 AM and 12:45 PM.
This window extends to a wider range of 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Republic Day (January 26), impacting all flight categories.

Expanded Scope of Restrictions
Initially applicable only to non-scheduled flights with certain exceptions, the revised NOTAM now extends the suspension to all flights during the specified time frame.
In addition to airport restrictions, airspace curbs will be in effect in the national capital from January 19 to January 29, aligning with Republic Day festivities.
Exemptions from Restrictions
Exceptions include operations by the Indian Air Force (IAF), Border Security Force (BSF), Army aviation helicopters, and state-owned aircraft/helicopters carrying the governor or chief minister of a state.
On Republic Day, January 26, flight operations will be entirely suspended from 6 am to 9 pm, aligning with the significant national celebration.
Being the largest airport in the country, the Delhi airport handles approximately 1,300 flights daily, underscoring the impact of these temporary restrictions.
Weather Impact
On a related note, the Delhi airport faced challenges on Friday due to dense fog and low visibility, causing disruptions to flight operations for the fifth consecutive day of the week.
As the nation prepares to commemorate its 75th Republic Day on January 26, these measures are essential to ensure the smooth conduct of celebratory events while prioritizing safety in aviation operations.
