Understanding LMIA
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document required for Canadian employers seeking to hire foreign workers. It proves that no Canadian citizens or permanent residents are available to fill the post and confirms the need for a foreign employee. An LMIA is sometimes known as a “confirmation letter.”
Securing an LMIA is an important step in the work permit application process. Upon successfully obtaining an LMIA, employers pave the way for their workers to subsequently apply for a work permit.
To apply for a work permit, a worker needs
- AÂ job offer letter
- A contract
- A copy of the LMIA, and
- The LMIA number
Employer’s Role in Obtaining LMIA
Employers must apply for an LMIA, which must be approved before a foreign worker may apply for a work permit.
The LMIA Online Portal streamlines the application process by allowing businesses and third-party agents to submit applications electronically. The online platform updates application status in real time and allows for document uploading, payment processing, and correspondence tracking.
