Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister of India on Tuesday in her budget 2022 announcement said that the govt of India will be rolled out chip-enabled ‘e-Passports’ from next year for more convenience to the public.

The new e-Passports will be infused with chips that would be secure with biometric data and will enable smooth passage through immigration posts globally, among other things.

It must be noted that Sanjay Bhattacharya, the MEA Secretary has already hinted about the same in January 2022 and said that Indian citizens will soon get chip-enabled ‘e-Passports’.

The upcoming ‘e-Passports’ will secure biometric data, be compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, and will be produced at Nashik’s India Security Press.

Currently, passports issued in India are in normal booklets which aren’t able to store any electronic information.

The next-gen e-passport jacket will have an electronic chip with security-related data encoded on it.

The e-passport is expected to facilitate smooth passage through immigration posts globally and provide more security as it hinges on biometric data.

It must be noted that currently, the ‘e-Passports’ project is on pilot and India had issued around 20,000 official and diplomatic e-Passports with an electronic microprocessor chip embedded in them.
