Get ready, globetrotters! Wizz Air, Hungary-based low-cost airlin, is set to revolutionize travel between India and Europe with its plans to launch direct flights between India and various European cities at unbelievably affordable fares.

The Dream of Direct Flights Becomes Reality

Currently, most direct flights between these two regions are operated by full-service carriers, making them quite expensive. Wizz Air aims to change this by offering one-way fares as low as €200 (approximately ₹18,000) on average, with some tickets dipping even below €100!

This exciting development will be a game-changer for budget-conscious travellers, tourists, and the Indian diaspora living in Europe.

Airbus A321XLR: The Key to Long-Haul Affordability

Wizz Air’s plan hinges on the Airbus A321XLR, a new extended-range version of the A321 aircraft. These fuel-efficient planes boast a range of up to 8.5 hours, allowing for non-stop connections between various European cities and major Indian airports.

The airline expects to receive its first A321XLR in February 2025, with a total of 47 joining the fleet by the end of the decade.

Expanding Routes and Services

Wizz Air is targeting connections between “six to seven” European cities and key Indian destinations. While regulatory approvals are still pending in India, the airline has already secured designations (permissions to operate) from Hungary, Italy, and Austria. Discussions with Indian authorities are ongoing to ensure a smooth rollout.

The airline is also exploring opportunities to operate direct flights between Abu Dhabi and India, contingent upon regulatory acceptance.

Navigating Regulatory Approvals

While the airline is optimistic about launching these routes by the next financial year, Váradi highlighted that final timelines depend on receiving necessary regulatory approvals from both Indian and European authorities. Wizz Air is actively engaging with relevant bodies to ensure compliance and expedite the launch process.
