No one wants to be seated in the middle of an aeroplane, but it happens, especially in economy class, and you just have to deal with it most of the time. Thus, many of us would prefer aisle or window seats, particularly on long journeys.

But now seating on the middle seat can be rewarding as Virgin Australia, an Australian-based airline recently launches a new and first-of-its-kind initiative to entice customers to book middle seats on its aircraft.

The airline announced the ‘Middle Seat Lottery’ which allows passengers in the middle seats of domestic flights operated by Virgin Australia to win one of 26 prizes bringing the total to more than US$230,000.

The lottery, according to Virgin Australia, will run until April 23, 2023, with a winner chosen at random each week and notified via email.

“We know that not every seat is created equal. But we believe that every seat should be wonderful – even the ones in the middle.”

That’s why we created the Middle Seat Lottery. It turns the middle seat into a chance to win wonderful prizes, like Velocity Platinum Status and a million Points, Caribbean cruises with Virgin Voyages including return flights to the US, or even a custom artwork by an Australian artist.”

This applies to both those who reserve middle seats and those who are assigned at check-in.

To commemorate the occasion, Virgin Australia Group CEO Jayne Hrdlicka surprised each passenger in a middle seat on Monday’s flight VA219 from Melbourne to Adelaide with a Virgin Voyages sailing trip worth up to USD5,999.

As a bonus, each aisle and window seat passenger received 10,000 Velocity points.

Commenting on this, the Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Australia Group stated that Virgin Australia is an airline that’s trying to do things differently and is coming up with exciting innovations to make every part of the travel experience more wonderful.
