The Department of Tourism in Kien Giang Province has proposed extending the current visa-free entry policy for international visitors to Phu Quoc Island from 30 days to six months.

The proposal aims to attract more foreign tourists and revitalize the island’s tourism industry, which has been declining due to the global economic situation and inflation.

Vietnam to Relax Visa Requirements

Phu Quoc Visa-Free Entry

Phu Quoc Island, the only location in Vietnam that offers visa-free entry for 30 days, received almost 700,000 foreign visitors in 2019. However, the number of foreign tourists visiting the island has been decreasing in recent times.

The Department of Tourism believes that extending the visa-free entry policy to six months will make it easier for foreign visitors to plan their trips and spend more time on the island.

Decline in Tourism

Despite this, the number of foreign tourists visiting Phu Quoc has been decreasing recently, with some airlines having to cancel flights to the island due to the decline in tourism.

The Department reported that in April 2023, the number of foreign visitors dropped by over 27% compared to the previous month, with a total of 47,725 tourists. Officials have attributed this to the global economic situation and inflation.

Phu Quoc Island, known for its long, sandy beaches with turquoise waters and dense forests, is a popular destination for both Vietnamese and foreign tourists. It is also home to a marine sanctuary and a national park that is famous among trekkers.
