As the global aviation industry is impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, airlines are looking for new markets to explore. Because of its growing travel demand and a rising middle class that can afford foreign travel, India has emerged as a lucrative market for global airlines.

VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines, two of Vietnam’s largest carriers, are competing for more flights between the two countries.

Flights between Vietnam and India

VietJet Air, a privately owned airline, intends to operate flights from four Vietnamese cities to five Indian destinations. In response, Vietnam Airlines increased its flight services to India by 30% beginning March 26. The airline currently operates five flights per week between the two countries, with daily flights to New Delhi on the way.

Following the pandemic, Vietnam Airlines resumed operations in India in June of last year, with three weekly flights from Hanoi and two from Ho Chi Minh City to New Delhi.

Vietnam Airlines will now operate the same number of flights to Delhi as low-cost carrier VietJet Air. Furthermore, VietJet Air operates three flights from Hanoi and four from Ho Chi Minh City on reversed frequencies.

Flight Schedule

Both the Hanoi-Delhi and HCMC-Delhi routes will be served by Vietnam Airlines’ Airbus A321 aircraft. These planes have 168 regular economy class seats in a 3-3 configuration and 16 business class reclining seats in a 2-2 configuration.

The five-hour flight from Vietnam to India’s capital departs between 6 and 7 p.m. and arrives around 10 p.m. The return flights leave Delhi before midnight and arrive in Vietnam between 6 and 7 a.m. the following morning. Vietnam Airlines also intends to begin service between Ho Chi Minh City and Mumbai later this year.
