The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has extended the validity of green cards for holders who file Form I-90, the renewal application. The extension period has been increased from 12 months to 24 months.

According to USCIS; “Lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired green card may be eligible for this extension. Form I-90 receipt notices previously provided a 12-month extension of a green card’s validity.”

Nearly 93,450 people of Indian origin received green cards in fiscal 2021. Indians are one of the top three nationalities in terms of obtaining a green card. Green cards have a ten-year validity period and must be renewed on a regular basis.

The language on Form I-90 receipt notices has been updated by USCIS to extend the validity of a green card for 24 months for individuals who have recently filed Form I-90.

On September 26, USCIS began printing amended receipt notices for people who had a Form I-90 pending.

These receipt notices can be presented in conjunction with an expired green card as proof of continued status.

According to USCIS, this extension is expected to benefit applicants who face longer processing times because they will receive proof of lawful permanent resident status while waiting for their renewed green card.
