The United States High Commission in India last week announced that the visa appointments are now available for students who need to be on campus by mid-August. The embassy also stated that interviews for F, M, and J visas will begin after August 14.
Those who wish to apply for a student visa can take an appointment through the official website of the US in India.
“Student visa appointments are available on our website. If you have an I-20, don’t wait! Future F, M, and J appointment openings at the Embassy and Consulates will be for interviews taking place after Aug 14, so if you need to arrive at school by mid-Aug, book an appointment now!”

The announcement comes after the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt of India urged top diplomats from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries to expedite student visas after receiving multiple letters and concerns about the visa process taking too long.
It must be noted that in May 2022, the US embassy endeavoured to ensure students that if they were unable to secure an interview in the first batch, slots would be available for the rest of July and early August.
Student visa interviews began earlier this year, with officials hoping to issue a larger number than the 62,000 issued in 2021 for the fall term.
According to a report in Economic Times, the first round of US student visa interview slots opened in May 2022 for dates in June and the first part of July.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, US embassies and consulates in India commenced student visa interviews on June 14, 2021, after most students obtained their I-20s.
The I-20 is a multi-purpose document provided by a US government-approved educational institution that certifies that a student has been admitted to a full-time study programme and has sufficient financial resources to stay in the United States.
The I-20, also known as the “Certificate of Eligibility,” permits a person to apply for an F-1 student visa at a US embassy or consulate overseas.
Students will be relieved to know that they may reapply for visas if they fail to pass the interview the first time and are denied visas. Appointments for second chances will be available in the second part of August, according to a US embassy statement.
