UK Prepares for EU’s New Digital Entry/Exit System Implementation

The UK government is gearing up for the EU's new digital Entry/Exit System (EES), scheduled to be implemented by October 6, 2024. This system will require non-EU travelers to provide biometric data at the border, with certain exemptions in place.

The UK government has confirmed that it will implement the necessary changes to accommodate the European Union’s new digital Entry/Exit System (EES) by October 6, 2024. This move is part of broader updates to the French border regulations.

What is the EES?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital system designed to enhance security and streamline the process for travellers entering and exiting the EU’s Schengen Zone.

This system will require travellers to create a digital record upon entry, including the provision of biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images. However, travellers with certain EU identity documents will be exempt from this requirement.

Delay in the Implementation

The implementation of the European Union’s new digital Entry/Exit System (EES), initially set to launch in 2023, has faced multiple delays. The most recent rescheduling has moved the start date to October 6, 2024.

What will change for UK Travellers?

Under the EES, UK citizens (and travellers from other non-EU countries) who don’t require a visa will need to register their entry and exit each time they cross a Schengen border. This registration involves capturing biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images at designated kiosks.

Who is Exempt?

1. Holders of certain EU residency permits: This includes all types of Withdrawal Agreement residency permits issued by France (temporary, 5-year, 10-year, and permanent permits). Valid residency permits from any other EU member state also exempt you.

2. UK nationals with Withdrawal Agreement rights: If you have residency rights under the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, you may be exempt from EES registration, but ensure you carry the correct documentation to prove your status.

3. Minors with DCEM document: Minors travelling with a Document de Circulation pour Étranger Mineur (DCEM) are exempt from EES requirements, regardless of whether they travel alone or with an adult.

Impact on Non-EU Travellers

The EES will apply to travellers from non-EU countries who do not require a visa, including those from the UK and the US. These travelers will need to register each time they cross the Schengen border, creating a digital record of their entry and exit.

Concerns Over Potential Delays

The government of the United Kingdom has expressed concerns about potential delays at ports due to the new biometric requirements. Discussions with the EU regarding a further delay in implementing the EES are ongoing to avoid disruption at major travel hubs.

French Preparations for EES

In response to these concerns, French authorities have taken proactive measures. Last year, they ordered 544 kiosks and 250 tablets to collect face and fingerprint biometrics from ferry car passengers. This initiative aims to address potential queues for UK travellers to France once the EES becomes operational.

Preparing for your EU Trip

  • Check Your Documentation: Ensure you have the correct documentation for your travel status, including any necessary residency permits or a DCEM for minors.
  • Stay Updated: Monitor travel advisories and official channels for the latest information on EES implementation and potential delays at ports.
  • Allow Extra Time: Be prepared for potentially longer queues at border crossings as the EES system is rolled out.

Travelling to Europe this fall? The new EES will require some additional steps for UK travellers. By understanding the system and preparing beforehand, you can ensure a smoother journey through EU borders.
