The United Kingdom is moving towards a fully digital immigration system, phasing out physical documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) in favor of electronic visas (eVisas).
Initially, the deadline for BRP holders to transition to eVisas was set for March 31, 2025. However, the UK government has now extended this deadline to June 1, 2025, offering travelers additional time to complete the transition.
What Is the UK eVisa?
eVisa is the UK’s digital immigration status system, replacing traditional paper-based documents such as BRPs and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs). It allows visa holders to access their status online through their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
However, despite this digital shift, travelers will still undergo immigration checks, and those with an expired BRP may face entry restrictions.
Key Points About the UK eVisa:
- Digital Replacement: eVisa replaces physical BRPs and EUSS BRCs.
- UKVI Account Access: Manage your eVisa through your UKVI account.
- Continued Immigration Checks: Standard immigration checks remain in place.
- Free and Straightforward: Creating a UKVI account to access your eVisa is free and relatively simple.
Key eVisa Deadlines for BRP Holders
- December 31, 2024: BRPs and EUSS BRCs expiring on or after this date will still be valid for international travel until June 1, 2025.
- June 1, 2025: After this date, expired BRPs and BRCs will no longer serve as proof of immigration status when entering the UK.
- June 2, 2025, Onward: Only eVisas will be recognized as proof of UK immigration status.
Transition to eVisa: How to Apply
The UK Home Office urges BRP and BRC holders to switch to eVisas before the deadline. Over 4 million visa holders have already completed the transition, while an estimated 600,000 have yet to create their UKVI accounts. The process is free and straightforward for those holding physical immigration documents.
To make the transition:
- Create a UKVI account using personal details and immigration reference numbers.
- Link existing immigration status to the online account.
- Access the digital eVisa whenever required for travel or employment verification.
What About Indefinite Leave to Remain Holders?
Individuals with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), who use an ink stamp or vignette in their passport, can continue to use these as proof of status. However, they are encouraged to switch to an eVisa for convenience and seamless verification.
UK’s Digital Travel Authorization (ETA) System
The UK government is also implementing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, requiring non-visa foreign visitors to obtain digital approval before travel:
- From November 27, 2024 – Eligible non-European travellers must apply for an ETA.
- From January 8, 2025 – ETA becomes mandatory for these travellers.
- From March 5, 2025 – ETA applications open for eligible European travellers.
- From April 2, 2025 – ETA becomes a requirement for European visitors.
Final Thoughts
With the UK transitioning to a fully digital immigration system, visa holders must act promptly to secure their e-visas before the June 2025 deadline. The shift to digital documentation aims to enhance security and streamline border control, making travel and residency verification easier for all. Travellers are advised to check their immigration status and complete the necessary updates well in advance.
