Thailand Extends Free Travel Insurance for Tourists Until Dec 31

Thailand extends its complimentary travel insurance program designed to support foreign tourists in case of emergencies, including accidents, illnesses, and even death. This policy is valid until December 31st, 2024.

In a move designed to solidify Thailand’s position as a premier tourist destination, the Thai government has announced the extension of its free travel insurance program also know as Thailand Traveller Safety, for all foreign visitors.

This program, initially set to expire on August 31st, 2024, will now be valid until December 31st, 2024. This extension aims to provide peace of mind and additional security for international travellers throughout the peak tourist season and beyond.

What is Thailand Traveller Safety (TTS)?

Thailand Traveller Safety (TTS) is an advanced registration system for non-Thai travelers entering Thailand. Created by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, it ensures legal protection and coverage for international visitors, enhancing their safety and compliance with Thai regulations during their stay.

Thailand’s Free Travel Insurance

The extended insurance scheme offers a robust safety net for tourists, providing significant financial protection in various emergency scenarios. Under this policy, the Thailand government ensures that all foreign visitors receive:

1. Accident Compensation: In cases of fatal accidents, the insurance provides a substantial compensation of 1 million baht (approximately $27,315 USD) to the family of the deceased.

2. Coverage for Disabilities: Incidents leading to the loss of organs or resulting in permanent disabilities are compensated up to 300,000 baht.

3. Medical Expense Reimbursement: Tourists incurring medical expenses due to accidents are covered for costs verified up to a maximum of 500,000 baht.

Scope of Coverage

This insurance covers a wide range of emergencies including accidents, crimes, and natural disasters, ensuring that international visitors can enjoy their travels with added peace of mind.

Support from Authorities

Sermsak Pongpanit, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, emphasized the importance of this initiative in providing essential support to international tourists.

By extending the free travel insurance program, Thailand aims to offer reassurance and assistance during unforeseen emergencies, reinforcing the country’s commitment to tourist welfare.

Tourism Surge and Economic Impact

Thailand’s proactive measures come in the wake of a significant tourism boom. The country has adjusted its foreign tourist arrival forecast for 2024, raising its target to 36.7 million visitors a million more than previously anticipated.

Favorable visa policies and concerted tourism promotion efforts have driven a 37% year-on-year increase in foreign arrivals, boosting the number to 15.5 million in the first half of the year alone.

Thailand demonstrates its commitment to international tourists’ well-being by offering a free travel insurance program that protects them throughout their stay. By extending this initiative, Thailand is not only addressing the immediate needs of its visitors but also fostering long-term growth and stability in its tourism sector.
