Suman Billa to join UNWTO as Director

Suman Billa, IAS, who was a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, will join the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as Director.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister, had approved his appointment last week.

As per sources, he will take charge of the UNWTO headquarters in Madrid, Spain, in the first week of December.

As Director in UNWTO, Billa will oversee Technical Cooperation and Silk Road Development at the D1 level at UNWTO, a specialized agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.

A 1996-batch Kerala cadre IAS officer, Billa has done notable work in Sustainable and Responsible Tourism as Secretary – Tourism, Kerala, and had won UNWTO Ulysses Award for Innovation in Public Policy and Governance.

He will hold the post of Director UNWTO for two years initially.
