From November 21, 2025, Slovenia will officially join the growing list of countries welcoming digital nomads. The government has announced a new one-year remote work residence permit, designed for foreign nationals working independently or for companies based outside Slovenia.

This is the first time Slovenia has introduced a dedicated immigration route for remote workers. The permit allows remote workers to enjoy Slovenia’s natural beauty and European lifestyle, without taking part in the local job market.

Who Can Apply for Slovenia’s Digital Nomad Visa?

The new visa is open exclusively to non-EU/EEA nationals who work remotely. Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Employed by a company based outside Slovenia
  • Contracted as a freelancer or contractor for a foreign business
  • Self-employed, providing services to clients outside Slovenia using digital communication tools

Applicants must not work for, or provide services to, any business or client located within Slovenia

Visa Validity and Renewal Rules

The Slovenian digital nomad visa is valid for 12 months and cannot be renewed. However, there is a workaround: individuals may reapply six months after the expiry of their previous permit.

This setup makes Slovenia an attractive yet flexible destination for short- to mid-term remote stays

Financial Requirements: How Much Do You Need to Earn?

Applicants must prove they have a sufficient minimum income to support themselves during their stay. Accepted documents include:

  • Employment contracts or freelance agreements
  • Recent payslips
  • Bank statements showing consistent monthly income

Exact income thresholds are yet to be finalised but will be based on government regulations.

How to Apply: In Slovenia or Abroad

There are two ways to apply:

  1. Outside Slovenia: Submit your application at a Slovenian consulate or embassy.
  2. In Slovenia, apply at a local administrative unit.

If you’re already in Slovenia, you’ll receive a temporary residence certificate after submitting your application. This certificate acts as a legal permit to stay while your application is being processed.

What About Family? Dependents Are Welcome

Family members can also apply for residence permits under this program. These dependent permits will match the main applicant’s visa duration (12 months).

However, just like the main applicant, dependents are not allowed to work in Slovenia unless they are also employed remotely by a non-Slovenian company.

Restrictions: No Local Employment or Business Activities

This visa is strictly for remote work. The following activities are not allowed:

  • Employment with any Slovenian company
  • Selling goods or services within Slovenia
  • Earning income from any Slovenia-based source

Breaking these rules could lead to visa cancellation or future entry restrictions.

Why Slovenia? A Rising Star for Remote Workers

Slovenia, known for its Alpine scenery, charming towns, and affordable cost of living compared to other European hubs, is positioning itself as a rising destination for digital nomads. This visa offers an opportunity to enjoy a high quality of life while staying compliant with immigration laws.

Final Thoughts

Slovenia’s introduction of a digital nomad visa is a welcome step for location-independent professionals. With clear rules, a defined income requirement, and family inclusion, it provides a structured yet appealing path for remote work life in Europe.
