Record High: 2.25 Lakh Indians Renounce Citizenship in 2022

The Indian government has reported that a record-breaking 2,25,620 Indian citizens renounced their citizenship in 2022. This is the highest number of citizens who revoked their Indian citizenship since 2011, with a total of 16,63,440 people doing so over the past 11 years.

According to the latest data released by the Indian government, a record-breaking 2,25,620 Indian citizens renounced their citizenship in 2022.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar provided the information in response to a question in Rajya Sabha. He stated that the lowest number of people who revoked their Indian citizenship was 85,256 in 2020.

Obtainment of Citizenship of Other Countries by Indians

Minister Jaishankar also provided a list of 135 countries whose citizenship was acquired by Indians. In response to a specific query, he stated that 5 Indian nationals had obtained citizenship in the United Arab Emirates over the past three years.

Indian Professionals Laid Off by US Companies

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan stated that the Indian government is aware of the issue of Indian professionals being laid off by US companies in recent months. A certain percentage of these laid-off employees are likely to be Indian nationals on H-1B and L1 visas.

The Indian government has consistently raised the issue of the movement of high-skilled workers, including IT professionals, with the US government. It has also been working with various stakeholders to address these issues, including industry organizations and business chambers.
