Poland Cracks Down on Student Visa Abuse with Stricter Rules

In a recent move to curb visa abuse, Poland has tightened its visa regulations for international students. This policy change follows the exposure of a “student visa scandal” earlier this year, which uncovered significant misuse of student visas by foreign nationals.

New Visa Requirements Target Misuse

Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, announced a stricter visa policy that will prevent the issuance of student visas to individuals who do not hold high school diplomas.

The decision aims to close loopholes that have allowed individuals to exploit the student visa system for unauthorized employment in the European Union.

“The misuse of student visas has become a significant issue, with many visa holders failing to attend the universities that facilitated their entry,” Sikorski explained during an interview. “We are implementing stricter regulations to ensure that only legitimate students are granted visas.”

Crackdown Follows Exposure of Visa Fraud

Poland decided to tighten its visa rules after discovering that many foreign nationals were obtaining student visas without meeting the required academic qualifications. Instead of attending their universities, these individuals were using their visas to work illegally within the Schengen Area.

This misuse of the visa system raised concerns, leading to stricter regulations to ensure that student visas are only issued to those genuinely pursuing education.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski emphasized the government’s determination to protect the integrity of Poland’s education system. “A student visa grants the right to work for one year, which led to numerous cases of abuse,” Sikorski stated.
