In a move aimed at attracting and retaining skilled migrants, New Zealand has announced an extension to the maximum continuous stay period for individuals applying for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

Starting from November 2023, migrants seeking an AEWV based on a permanent role may now be granted a visa valid for up to 5 years.

Longer Stay Period for AEWV Holders

Under the new policy, eligible migrants who secure an Accredited Employer Work Visa can stay in New Zealand for a continuous period of up to 5 years.

However, after reaching the 5-year mark, these visa holders will be required to leave the country for a minimum of 12 months, unless they are on a pathway to residence or have a residence application pending.

Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa and Work Experience Requirement

The recent revision also affects the Skilled Migrant Category Resident visa, introducing a new requirement for many migrants to gain work experience in New Zealand before they can apply for residence.

This measure aims to encourage migrants to contribute to the New Zealand workforce and society before obtaining permanent residency.

Smooth Transition for Existing AEWV Holders

Current AEWV holders who were granted a 3-year visa will have the opportunity to apply for another AEWV, which will allow them to extend their stay in New Zealand to a maximum of 5 years.

The good news for employers is that they will not need to undergo a job check for these workers if their visa conditions remain unchanged.

Various Pathways to New Zealand Residence

New Zealand offers several skills-based pathways for individuals seeking New Zealand residence. These pathways include:

  1. Skilled Migrant Resident pathway
  2. Green List pathway
  3. Care Workforce and Transport Sector Agreement pathways

Depending on the chosen pathway, applicants may have the option to apply for residence straight away, as seen with the Straight to Residence Visa, or they may be required to work in New Zealand before becoming eligible to apply for residence, as seen with the Work to Residence Visa.

Meeting the Requirements

Regardless of the pathway chosen, all applicants must meet specified requirements for their respective pathways, as well as standard requirements in areas such as age, English language proficiency, health, and character.

The extension of the maximum continuous stay period for Accredited Employer Work Visa holders marks a significant step towards attracting and retaining skilled migrants, fostering a diverse and talented workforce in New Zealand.

The new policy is expected to have a positive impact on the nation’s economy and community, as migrants contribute their skills and expertise to various sectors across the country.
