Nepal has reopened its doors to foreign tourists after keeping them out for 9 months as the country fought the COVID-19 war.

All tourist visas have been restored and foreign visitors can now freely fly into the country, immigration officials said, but land borders are still closed.

“The issuing of an entry visa for tourists from Nepalese diplomatic missions abroad has resumed,” said the immigration service. Only travelers with a prior authorization and recommendation from the government are allowed to enter overland, the ministry said.

Visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu are only provided to representatives and families of diplomatic missions, United Nations agencies, international organizations and non-resident Nepalis without prior authorization letters and recommendations.

“All foreigners should obtain a tourist visa from Nepali diplomatic missions abroad or they should have a pre-approval or recommendation letter from the concerned ministries for ensuring their ‘on-arrival’ visa at Kathmandu airport,” said Ramesh Kumar KC, Director General of the Immigration Service, said the post.

“A cabinet meeting on December 3rd decided to bring tourists back. This will help to increase the arrivals in Nepal to some extent.”
