Manali Bans Camping Without Permission; Illegal Tourist Tents Will Be Permanently Removed

This implies that you must now obtain permission from the forest department and the administration in order to pitch tents and enjoy camping in Manali.

The decision is intended to put an end to illegal camping in the forests of Kullu and Manali.

It may be noted that several hoteliers and hospitality unit owners have objected to certain businesspeople illegally erecting a significant number of tents in isolated locations near Manali.

According to a local hotelier, businessmen from other states have set up tents in the forests of Hamta, Bhrigu, Beas Kund, Chanderkhani, and other locations. He also claims that they obtain permission from the Forest Department to set up five or six tents, but then put up 25 to 30 tents and refuse to remove them.

The Himachal Pradesh government has asked officials to check all illegal camping and remove illegal tents permanently from such places.

INR 50 Fees For Entering Forest Areas

Apart from banning illegal tents, the state govt has also imposed a fee of ₹50 on all those who enter the forest areas of Kullu and Manali.

To ensure that the task is completed, a special team has been formed. There will also be checkpoints in numerous areas, particularly around the beginning of famous trekking routes.

Illegal Camping In Manali

A meeting was recently organized in Manali to discuss illegal camping in the region, and it was determined that all such sites will be dismantled. According to Surender Thakur, Manali sub-divisional magistrate, there have been multiple complaints concerning illegal and permanent camping in forest areas.

“These campsites are littering areas and also polluting water sources. Strict action will be taken to stop this activity,” said Thakur.

According to reports, a team will set up temporary checkpoints to verify permits and compliance with HP Adventure Activities Rules.

To control hiking and camping, the first checkpoint will be built on the Hamta Pass Trek. This is one of the most well-known and popular treks in Himachal Pradesh.

The forest department will issue camping permits, and the activity will be restricted to areas at least 25 metres away from water streams. Solo camping is likewise prohibited until special authorization is acquired.
